Everybody's Talking About My Mosaic Alphabet Book!
Cape Cod Magazine~ "L" is for Labor of Love

“My Mosaic Alphabet Book” is the latest creation of Cape Cod mosaic artist Jim Bowen and his wife, Debbie. The hardcover children’s book features letters of the alphabet created in colorful and detailed mosaics by Jim, with poetry written by Debbie to go along with each letter.
“It’s been almost a five-year journey,” from concept to publication, says Jim. The book started with a desire to make something for their granddaughter, Pilar. “What grandparent doesn’t want to make an alphabet book for their grandchild?” Jim says, with a laugh.
Each letter mosaic has intricately inlaid designs of things that begin with that letter. The letter A features an apple tree, an aardvark, and an airplane. Debbie’s poetry ties everything together, giving kids a tongue-twister of letter A words. “An airplane ascends in the African sky, alerting the ants to avoid the aardvark. Alas, they advance up the apple tree, to arrive safe at home before dark.”
Debbie has been a practicing poet since she was a little girl, when her mother bought her a book of poetry. She said she’d always wanted to publish her poetry, and it all fell into place as she started thinking up rhymes to go with each of Jim’s mosaics. V is for Verona, F is for France. “On some of the letters, I didn’t put a place. I thought it’d be fun for the kids to make up,” says Debbie.

"M is for Mosaic-Cape Cod Style" October 2, 2016 Written by Laura M. Reckford FALMOUTH – Artist Jim Bowen is said to be a leader in the effort to bring the ancient art form of mosaics to Cape Cod, and now in his new book, “My Mosaic Alphabet Book,” he brings a colorful alphabet—a series of mosaics—to young readers. “As far as I know he was the first to make and teach [mosaics] here,” said Cataumet artist Linda Dadak of Creative Glass design, who first worked with mosaics in a class with Bowen. Bowen has been a mentor over the years to Dadak and others through classes and community art projects that feature mosaics. Those projects include a 20-foot long mosaic on a bridge underpass along the Shining Sea Bikeway in Falmouth, as well as mosaics at the Falmouth Dog Park, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, at Cape Cod Community College and even in the Outer Cape at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. But his largest project is for his littlest fans: “My Mosaic Alphabet Book” is a rhyming children’s book done in mosaics. Read more.... http://capecodwave.com/m-mosaic-cape-cod-style/ |

Mosaic Artist Creates Alphabet Book By JOANNE BRIANA-GARTNER July 29, 2016 Did the ancient Greeks teach their children the alphabet via colorful artwork and clever rhymes? If they did, it’s likely they created those early abcderiums in mosaic, an art form that dates back as far as the golden age of Greece. Regardless of whether his forefathers in art used mosaics for celebrating the alphabet, mosaic artist Jim Bowen of Bourne has recently completed the task: 26 14-x-14-inch mosaics, each illustrating a different letter, combined with verses by Mr. Bowen’s wife, Debbie, to create “My Mosaic Alphabet Book.” Read on....http://www.capenews.net/arts_and_entertainment/mosaic-artist-creates-alphabet-book/article_e0393cbb-4d8b-51ae-84f4-fc88260b37bd.html |
