James Bowen, Artist
My artistic journey has come full circle. In my younger days, I toiled in painting, print making pottery- just about any art form you could think of. After traveling to Europe in the late 90’s, I became fascinated with mosaics and I settled on this ancient art form as my medium.
A mosaic is a very detailed work of art made up of numerous pieces of small material (usually glass or stone) that fit together to make one large picture. My career as a mosaic artist opened many doors. I was an adjunct professor at Cape Cod Community College for a decade. I created commissioned pieces for restaurants and fine homes. I led public art projects making mosaic murals that dot Cape Cod including the huge Shining Sea Bikeways mosaic in Falmouth. In the end of my mosaic journey, I took 4-5 years to create “My Mosaic Alphabet Book”, a children’s alphabet book that has sold 2,000 copies.
My desire to break out of the tight confines of working in such detail exploded when I picked up a 4” paint brush, put it to a large canvas and a choir of angels sang! Seriously, now I am back to the beginning of my artist journey, with paint brush in hand trying to capture the feeling of this place we love-Cape Cod.
Throughout my life as an artist, my work has been displayed in museums and galleries throughout the Cape. I am proud to have earned a “best in show” at the 2009 Falmouth Guild Fall Juried Show. I’ve been featured in numerous magazine and newspaper articles including Cape Cod Magazine, Cape Cod Life and Cape Cod Times. I am a member of the Falmouth Artist Guild. My creative side follows me everyday as a color and haircutting specialist at Artisan Salon in Falmouth.
My wish is that my paintings open up your imagination and inspire a sense of peace within you.
